Emerald Crab
$7.00
The emerald crab (Mithraculus sculptus) is a hardy, beneficial marine scavenger.
Tank Requirements & Water Parameters
- Tank Size: 20 to 30 gallons for a single crab. Add 10 extra gallons for each additional crab to reduce territorial aggression.
- Rockwork: Provide plenty of live rock with crevices and hiding spots for daytime shelter and molting.
- Temperature: 72°F – 78°F (some sources note up to 82°F is acceptable, but 72°F–78°F is ideal).
- pH: 8.1 – 8.4
- Salinity (Specific Gravity): 1.023 – 1.025
- Alkalinity (dKH): 8 – 12
- Copper Warning: Never use copper-based medications or chemicals in tanks containing emerald crabs, as it is toxic to them.
Diet & Feeding
- Algae Control: Known for eating nuisance algae, especially bubble algae and hair algae.
- Omnivorous Diet: They scavenge leftover fish food, detritus, and meaty foods.
- Supplemental Feeding: Feed algae wafers, pellets, or dried seaweed if natural algae runs low. Undernourished crabs may nip at corals or small tank mates.
Temperament & Tank Mates
- Temperament: Generally peaceful to semi-aggressive. They can occasionally scrap with other bottom-dwelling invertebrates.
- Reef Compatibility: Generally reef-safe, but larger individuals should be monitored if they lack food.
- Acclimation: Use slow drip acclimation when introducing them to prevent shock from salinity or chemistry changes.
