Chaetomorpha, commonly called “chaeto” or spaghetti algae, is a fast-growing green marine macroalgaewidely used in saltwater aquarium refugiums and algae reactors for natural filtration.
What is Chaetomorpha Used For?
- Nutrient Export: It absorbs excess nitrates and phosphates from the water column as it grows, starving out nuisance algae in the main display tank.
- Microfauna Habitat: Its dense, wiry, spaghetti-like structure provides a safe home for beneficial copepods, amphipods, and other microfauna.
- pH Stabilization: Operating a refugium light on a reverse photoperiod (lights on when display lights are off) helps stabilize nighttime pH drops.
Growth and Care Requirements
- Lighting: Requires moderate to high, full-spectrum LED lighting dedicated to the refugium or reactor.
- Flow: Needs strong, tumbling water flow so the entire mass stays buoyant and receives equal light exposure.
- Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 68–78°F (20–25°C)
- Salinity / Specific Gravity: 1.023–1.025
- pH: 8.0–8.4
- Nitrates: 3–20 ppm
- Phosphates: 0.01–0.05 ppm (should not bottom out at absolute 0 ppm or growth stalls)
