Water Parameters
- Temperature: 72–78°F (stable)
- Salinity (Specific Gravity): 1.023–1.025
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
- Calcium: 380–450 ppm
Lighting and Flow
- Lighting: Moderate (PAR 50–250) using LED, T5, or metal halide systems.
- Water Flow: Medium to strong flow is necessary to prevent detritus buildup and help the coral shed its waxy coating.
Feeding and Care Habits
- Photosynthesis: They derive most of their energy from light via symbiotic zooxanthellae.
- Supplemental Feeding: Optional. Occasional target feeding with fine suspended foods like phytoplankton, baby brine shrimp, or Reef Roids can enhance growth.
- Shedding: They periodically retract their polyps and form a waxy, translucent film that they later shed. This normal cleaning process can take days to a couple of weeks.
Placement and Compatibility
- Chemical Warfare: They are semi-aggressive and release chemical toxins (terpenes) into the water that can stunt or harm neighboring stony (LPS/SPS) corals.
- Mitigation: Maintain adequate physical spacing and run activated carbon in your filtration system to neutralize toxins.
