Zoanthids are hardy, colorful colonial polyps that make great beginner corals for reef aquariums.
Water Parameters
- Temperature: 75–78°F (24–26°C)
- Salinity: 1.025–1.026 specific gravity (35 ppt)
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Alkalinity: 8–12 dKH
- Calcium / Magnesium: Calcium at 400–450 ppm; Magnesium at 1250–1350 ppm
- Stability: Stable parameters matter more than chasing exact numbers
Lighting and Placement
- Lighting: Low to moderate light (75–250 PAR)
- Placement: Start them on the bottom or middle third of the tank to prevent bleaching
- Acclimation: Slowly move them higher if they need more light
Water Flow and Feeding
- Flow: Low to moderate indirect flow to keep debris off polyps without blasting them
- Feeding: Photosynthetic and do not require heavy feeding, but target feeding small particle foods or amino acids boosts growth
- Safety Warning: Always wear gloves and eye protection when cutting or propagating zoanthids because they can produce dangerous toxins.
