Halloween Hermit Crab
Tank Requirements
- Minimum Tank Size: At least 15 gallons (approx. 60+ liters) for a single specimen.
- Water Parameters: Maintain a temperature of 72°F – 82°F (22 – 28°C), specific gravity (salinity) of 1.020 – 1.025, and pH of 8.0 – 8.5.
- Substrate & Rockwork: Provide a sandy substrate for sifting and plenty of live rock for foraging and hiding places.
- Spare Shells: Keep multiple empty snail shells available—specifically conical shells like Conus or olive/mitre shells that match their flat body shape. Failing to provide extra shells can lead to aggression or attacks on living snails and other hermits.
Diet & Feeding
- Omnivorous Scavenger: Feeds on green hair algae, cyanobacteria, detritus, and leftover fish food.
- Supplemental Food: Feed 1 to 2 times a week with frozen mysis shrimp, raw table shrimp, pieces of clam or scallop, and algae tablets or dried seaweed.
Temperament & Compatibility
- Reef-Safe: Safe around most fish and corals, though larger individuals may occasionally knock over loose rockwork or coral frags.
- Behavior: Can display territorial behavior or fight other hermit crabs if food or suitable replacement shells are scarce.
