Water Parameters & Tank Conditions
- Temperature: 72°F – 84°F (ideal range around 76°F – 80°F)
- Salinity: 1.025 – 1.026
- pH: 8.0 – 8.4
- Alkalinity: 8 – 10 dKH
- Calcium: 400 – 450 ppm
- Nitrate / Phosphate: Tolerates higher nutrient levels than stony corals, with stable nitrates around 5–10 ppm and phosphates around 0.05–0.1 ppm.
Lighting & Water Flow
- Lighting: Low to moderate lighting (roughly 50 to 250 PAR). If the coral shrivels or turns pale, the light may be too intense.
- Flow: Moderate, indirect water flow. Too much direct flow can tear tissue or cause polyps to stay retracted.
Feeding & Nutrition
- Kenya tree corals host symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) that provide energy through photosynthesis.
- They also capture supplemental foods from the water column, including phytoplankton, microplankton, marine snow, and dissolved organic matter. Regular fish waste in a standard reef tank often supplies enough ambient nutrition.
Growth, Spreading & Chemical Warfare
- Space & Aggression: They are semi-aggressive and engage in allelopathy (chemical warfare) by releasing compounds into the water to compete for space against neighboring corals. Give them several inches of clearance and run activated carbon in your filtration system to neutralize toxins.
- Propagation: They grow rapidly and reproduce asexually by dropping branches or “buds” that drift, settle, and attach elsewhere in the aquarium, sometimes acting like a fast-spreading nuisance. You can easily trim or frag them using a razor blade if they take over
