Platygyra corals, commonly known as maze brain corals, are hardy large polyp stony (LPS) corals.
Lighting and Placement
- Keep lighting low to moderate, around 50 to 150 PAR, to prevent bleaching.
- Mount the coral in the lower two-thirds of the aquarium on a stable rock or sandbed.
- Leave 1 to 2 inches of space around the colony because they extend long sweeper tentacles at night to sting nearby neighbors.
Water Flow
- Provide low to moderate water movement.
- Avoid blasting the coral with direct, strong flow, which can strip its skin.
Water Parameters
- Temperature: 74–80°F (23–27°C)
- Salinity (Specific Gravity): 1.024–1.026
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Alkalinity: 8–9.5 dKH
- Calcium: 400–450 ppm
- Magnesium: 1300–1450 ppm
- Nitrates: Below 10–25 ppm
- Phosphates: 0.01–0.1 ppm
Feeding
- They get most of their energy from symbiotic algae (zooxanthellae) via photosynthesis.
- Supplemental target feeding with mysis shrimp, Oysters-Feast, or finely chopped meaty foods at night (with water flow temporarily turned off) helps encourage fast growth and full polyp extension.
