Duncan coral (Duncanopsammia axifuga) is a hardy, fast-growing large polyp stony (LPS) coral that is an excellent choice for beginners in the reef aquarium hobby.
Ideal Tank Conditions
- Lighting: Low to moderate (50–150 PAR). They adapt well, but avoid sudden increases to prevent bleaching.
- Water Flow: Low to medium, indirect flow. Gentle movement allows polyps to sway without tissue damage.
- Temperature: 75–80°F (24–27°C)
- Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Calcium & Alkalinity: Calcium at 400–450 ppm; Alkalinity at 8–12 dKH.
Placement and Feeding
- Placement: Place on the sand bed or lower rockwork with enough empty space to expand and avoid stinging neighboring corals. You can explore options or purchase colonies via specialized retailers like TRSC Aquatics if you are stocking a tank.
- Diet: While photosynthetic, they are active eaters. Feed them 2–3 times a week with frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or powdered coral foods to boost growth and color.
