The Tomini Tang (Ctenochaetus tominiensis), also called the bristletooth or flame fin tang, is a popular, active, and useful saltwater aquarium fish. It features a dark body with bright orange-trimmed fins and grows to a maximum size of about 6 inches.
Tank Requirements
- Minimum Size: 70 gallons is recommended so the fish has enough horizontal space to swim back and forth.
- Aquascape: Provide plenty of live rock with open swimming areas and caves to graze and hide.
- Water Parameters: Maintain a temperature of 72°F–78°F, pH of 8.1–8.4, dKH of 8–12, and salinity (specific gravity) of 1.020–1.025.
Diet and Feeding
- Herbivore Needs: They graze constantly on hair algae, biofilm, and detritus.
- Supplementing: Feed dried seaweed or nori daily to support their immune system and vibrant colors. They also accept frozen foods like Mysis shrimp, pellets, and flakes.
Temperament and Compatibility
- Reef Safe: Yes, they are safe with corals, clams, and inverters.
- Aggression: They are semi-aggressive and can be territorial toward other tangs, especially species with similar body shapes.
- Care Level: Moderate, largely due to the need for proper water quality and specific algae-based feeding.
