Cleaner Skunk Shrimp
Original price was: $40.00.$35.00Current price is: $35.00.
Cleaner shrimp are peaceful, easy-to-care-for marine invertebrates that help keep reef fish free of parasites and dead tissue.
Ideal Water Parameters
- Temperature: 72–78°F (22–26°C)
- Salinity: 1.023–1.025 specific gravity (must be kept stable)
- pH Balance: 8.1–8.4
- Ammonia & Nitrite: 0 ppm
- Nitrates: Under 20 ppm
- Calcium: 400–450 ppm (vital for shell growth)
Tank Setup and Acclimation
- Minimum Tank Size: 20 gallons is recommended for a single shrimp.
- Rockwork: Provide plenty of live rock and caves where they can set up cleaning stations and hide.
- Acclimation: Use a slow drip method over 1 to 2 hours; cleaner shrimp cannot handle sudden pH or salinity shifts.
- Warning: Never use copper-based medications in an aquarium with cleaner shrimp, as copper is fatal to them.
Diet and Feeding
- Food Type: Carnivorous and omnivorous; they accept frozen mysis, brine shrimp, and marine pellets.
- Frequency: Feed 2 to 4 times per week. Direct target feeding prevents them from stealing food from corals.
Behavior and Molting
- Cleaning Stations: They pluck parasites and dead skin off fish, which will often hover still to be cleaned.
- Molting: They shed their exoskeletons every few weeks. Leave the discarded shell in the tank so the shrimp can reabsorb vital calcium.
- Tank Mates: Avoid aggressive fish that eat crustaceans, such as lionfish, hawkfish, and large triggerfish.
