Blue Hippo Tang
Tank Requirements & Water Parameters
- Minimum Tank Size: 100 to 180+ gallons (ideally a 6-foot-long tank) because adults grow up to 12 inches and need open horizontal swimming space.
- Temperature: 75°F – 82°F (24°C – 28°C).
- Salinity (Specific Gravity): 1.020 – 1.025.
- pH Range: 8.1 – 8.4.
- Water Flow & Filtration: Strong surface agitation, high oxygenation, and powerful protein skimming.
- Decor: Extensive live rock providing caves and secure hiding spots (note: they often sleep on their side wedged into rock cracks, which is normal behavior).
Diet & Feeding
- Primary Diet: Herbivore/omnivore requiring abundant marine algae, dried nori sheets (secured with a clip), and spirulina-based foods.
- Meaty Supplements: Occasional Mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or chopped seafood.
- Health Prevention: Regular algae feeding prevents coral-picking and fatal Head and Lateral Line Erosion (HLLE).
Temperament & Tank Mates
- Compatibility: Generally peaceful toward non-tang community fish (like clownfish, wrasses, and blennies).
- Tang Aggression: Territorial toward other surgeonfish and conspecifics; mix different tang genera only in very large systems (220+ gallons) with simultaneous introduction.
- Reef Safe: Safe with corals and most invertebrates, though large adults can accidentally bump or damage delicate coral colonies.
- Defense: Possesses sharp, folding caudal spines near the base of the tail—handle gently with a soft container or net to avoid injuries.
Health & Lifespan
- Lifespan: 8 to 20 years with proper care.
- Common Diseases: Famously prone to marine Ich (Cryptocaryon), velvet, and HLLE, especially when stressed by cramped quarters or poor water quality.
- Quarantine: A 2-to-4 week quarantine protocol (often using copper treatment) is strongly recommended before introducing them to a display tank.
