Pitho Crabs
Tank Requirements
- Minimum Tank Size: 5 to 10 gallons or larger.
- Aquascape: Requires a mature, well-established aquarium with plenty of live rock for hiding, camouflaging, and grazing.
- Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 72°F – 78°F
- pH: 8.1 – 8.4
- Nitrate (NO3): ~0 ppm preferred
- Salinity & Alkalinity: Must remain stable; sudden shifts stress them during molting.
Diet & Feeding
- Primary Foods: Consumes bubble algae (Valonia), hair algae, turf algae, Caulerpa, Dictyota, and leftover fish food.
- Supplementation: Once nuisance algae runs low, supplement their diet with seaweed, nori, or algae shots (such as Nutramar Ogo) to prevent them from becoming opportunistic.
Temperament & Tank Mates
- Temperament: Peaceful, nocturnal, and generally safe with most corals and fish.
- Reef Safe With Caution: While mostly herbivorous, hungry or underfed crabs may occasionally inspect soft corals or weakened invertebrates.
- Size Dimorphism:
- Males: Grow up to about 1.25 inches (carapace size) with small, harmless claws.
- Females: Grow up to about 1.5 inches with larger defensive claws (resembling emerald crabs).
