Lighting & Placement
- Lighting: Clove polyps are photosynthetic through symbiotic zooxanthellae. They do not demand intense lighting and generally thrive in 50 to 150 PAR. Placing them under excessively high light can cause them to shrivel or close up.
- Flow: Provide moderate to high water flow. Strong flow helps keep their base clean and prevents detritus from settling on the creeping stolon network (runners), which can cause the coral to die back.
- Tank Placement: Mount them on rockwork or rubble rather than directly in the sandbed, as they attach via stolons. Because some varieties (like blue clove polyps) can grow quickly and spread across rocks, consider isolating them on a separate rock “island” to keep them from overrunning neighbors.
Feeding & Nutrition
- Clove polyps get most of their energy from light via photosynthesis.
- Direct feeding is generally not required, though they benefit from occasional supplemental micro-foods like phytoplankton, powdered zooplankton, or the cloudy supernate from thawed meaty foods like mysis shrimp or rotifers.
Compatibility & Temperament
- Temperament: Peaceful. They do not possess aggressive sweeper tentacles to sting neighboring corals, though fast-growing colonies can physically crowd out slower species.
- Tankmates: Safe with standard reef-safe fish and invertebrates, though they use chemical deterrents and will retract into their calyces if disturbed or stressed.
