Turbinaria corals (commonly known as scroll, cup, vase, or pagoda corals) are hardy, slow-growing stony corals ideal for reef aquariums.
Water Parameters
- Temperature: 72°F – 78°F (22°C – 26°C)
- Salinity / Specific Gravity: 1.023 – 1.026
- pH: 8.1 – 8.4
- Alkalinity (dKH): 7.5 – 12 dKH (8 – 9 dKH is ideal)
- Calcium: 380 – 450 ppm
- Magnesium: 1300 – 1450 ppm
- Nitrates & Phosphates: Maintain detectable nitrates (5 – 15 ppm) and low phosphates (0.01 – 0.1 ppm) to prevent browning or algae issues.
Lighting and Placement
- Lighting: Moderate light (around 50 to 150+ PAR, or mid-tank illumination). Always acclimate the coral by starting it lower in the aquarium before moving it up.
- Placement: Position them in the middle-to-upper region of the tank with plenty of surrounding space. Because their cup-like or scrolling shelves grow outward, they can shade out corals placed directly beneath them.
- Temperament: They are peaceful and non-aggressive, though they can be stung if placed too close to aggressive neighboring corals.
Water Flow
- Flow Rate: Moderate to strong, random, and turbulent water movement is essential.
- Maintenance: Cup and scroll shapes easily catch debris, detritus, and sand particles. Use a turkey baster every few days or ensure random flow keeps the horizontal surfaces clean to prevent tissue necrosis or bacterial infections.
Feeding and Supplementation
- Diet: They combine photosynthesis with active particulate feeding using their small-to-medium polyps.
- Food Types: Supplemental target feeding with powdered coral foods (such as Reeferoids), phytoplanktons, or small meaty foods like brine shrimp works well.
- Skeletal Support: Regular testing and dosing of calcium, alkalinity, and magnesium support their hard stone skeletons as they expand.
