Duncan coral (Duncanopsammia axifuga) is a hardy, fast-growing large polyp stony (LPS) coral that is an excellent choice for beginners in the reef aquarium hobby.

  • Lighting: Low to moderate (50–150 PAR). They adapt well, but avoid sudden increases to prevent bleaching.
  • Water Flow: Low to medium, indirect flow. Gentle movement allows polyps to sway without tissue damage.
  • Temperature: 75–80°F (24–27°C)
  • Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG
  • pH: 8.1–8.4
  • Calcium & Alkalinity: Calcium at 400–450 ppm; Alkalinity at 8–12 dKH. 
Placement and Feeding
  • Placement: Place on the sand bed or lower rockwork with enough empty space to expand and avoid stinging neighboring corals. 
  • Diet: While photosynthetic, they are active eaters. Feed them 2–3 times a week with frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, or powdered coral foods to boost growth and color.
